Since November, I’ve been studying the Oklahoma Department of Corrections and looking into different issues and historical articles written about its facilities. During a project about escaped inmates in December, I heard about a woman named Nannie Doss, who confessed to killing several family members and four of her five husbands. I was interested in Doss and decided to do some research on her killings and conviction. I knew right away that I wanted to do a story, but I wasn’t sure what the angle would be.

One day I was going through the Oklahoman’s digital archives and found a story about her sentencing. The judge in the case said in the story that he thought Doss was insane despite medical evaluations. Due to this, she was sentenced to life instead of receiving the death penalty. It peaked my interest that the judge also noted that Oklahoma had never executed a woman.

I knew the state executed three women in 2001, and I began to wonder if Doss would have received the same sentence today. I reached out to officials and asked what they thought about the case and other female executions.

I recently got a Canon Rebel camera and have been dying to try it out on a breaking news assignment. This morning when I heard about a possible arson in northwest Oklahoma City, it was one of the first things I grabbed.

The fire destroyed one home and scorched another. This was all that remained of the first house.

Lately I’ve been neglecting my tumblr, but I have a really good excuse. For the past month I’ve been working on a special coverage project with another reporter about the Oklahoma Department of Corrections and its most wanted prison escapees. With the content finally turned in and the end almost in sight, I can finally breathe.

It’s been hectic and exhausting at times, but I’m looking forward to seeing the finished package. We spent a lot of time on the project, examining manhunt procedures, high profile escapes in the past, statistics and even profiling the five medium and three maximum security prisons in the state.

Be sure to check it out in The Oklahoman’s Sunday edition. We’ll also have more multimedia elements online.

Oklahoma City officials gave Occupy OKC protesters to Thursday to vacate Kerr Park. To prevent the eviction, protesters filed a temporary restraining order and injunction Thursday against the city to stay downtown.

Now city officials say they will wait until a federal judge looks at the case before making any decisions.

NewsOK ran a story this Sunday about an update on a raging wildfire that burned more than 27,000 acres of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in September.

The fire was fully contained a month later, but reporter Ron Jackson looks at the lasting effects of the blaze and how it could impact wildlife at the site.

The scenic refuge is again open to visitors, and Mother Nature has started the healing process. Greenery can already be seen sprouting from the charred and blackened carpet that covers the refuge terrain, but normalcy is nowhere in sight.

This is chaos. It’s hard to believe people are fighting...
